Health Benefits of Alfalfa

Alfalfa also known as medicago sativa or lucerne is a perennial plant part of the legume family that is also considered an herb. It was originally cultivated in South and Central Asia but is also grown around the world. The seeds and dried leaves can be used as a supplement but you can also eat them in the form of alfalfa sprouts. 

Alfalfa has culinary and medicinal purposes. In Chinese Traditional Medicine, alfalfa leaves are used to stimulate appetite and relieve ulcers. In Indian ayurvedic medicine, alfalfa leaves are used to relieve water retention, arthritis and ulcers. Traditionally, alfalfa has also been used to treat respiratory health conditions including bronchitis, the flu or the common cold as well as other viral infections.

Alfalfa has essential vitamins and minerals including, vitamin K, vitamin C,vitamin E, folate, thiamine, riboflavin, magnesium, calcium, potassium, phosphorus, iron, and copper. 

Alfalfa contains antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. 

Alfalfa may improve pms and menopause symptoms. Alfalfa is high in plant compounds including phytoestrogen and vitamin K that may help with excessive bleeding and cramping. . Alfalfa may also aid in reproductive health, limiting moodiness and pain and it may also help stimulate breast milk production. 

Alfalfa may help treat diabetes by reducing blood sugar levels. Alfalfa may also reduce pain and inflammation associated with arthritis. 

Alfalfa may also cleanse and detoxify the body. Alfalfa may also promote digestive health.  

Alfalfa may also lower cholesterol and blood pressure levels, and help treat kidney stones. 

Alfalfa may interact with certain medications including blood thinners. Alfalfa may have harmful side effects for those who are pregnant, and those who have an autoimmune disorder or a compromised immune system.
