Health Benefits of Mullein
Health Benefits of Mullein
Mullein also known as great mullein (verbascum thapsus) is a flowering plant native to Europe, Africa and western Asia but is now grown in North America and around the world.
Traditionally, mullein’s leaves, flowers and roots have been used medicinally to treat migraines, digestive issues, skin conditions, and respiratory conditions such as asthma, cough, tonsillitis, bronchitis, COPD and the common cold.
Mullein is rich in antioxidants, including flavonoids. Antioxidants help fight free radicals in the body and may help prevent the risk of chronic diseases.
Mullein has anti-inflammatory, antiviral and antibacterial properties.
Mullein is rich in vitamins and minerals including vitamin C, potassium, magnesium, and zinc.
Mullein is considered an expectorant which helps expel excess mucus. Studies have shown that mullein contains mucilage with demulcent activity. A demulcent is a substance that forms a soothing, anti-inflammatory coating on the mucous membranes.
Mullein may help with digestive issues such as constipation and diarrhea. Mullein may also help soothe hemorrhoids.
Mullein may help treat skin issues such as bug bites, wounds and acne.
Mullein may also help treat tooth pain and gum disease.
Mullein may also help treat osteoarthritis.
Mullein may also help improve sleep, anxiety and depression.
Mullein may help treat ear infections but more research is needed.
As always, consult with your physician.
