What should you do for better sleep?

Insomnia can disrupt our lives tremendously. Here are some tips for better sleep.

Stress is an underlying cause of insomnia. De-stressing should be your main priority to get better sleep. Schedule some personal time for yourself or learn and create boundaries. Maintain your peace because stress can lead to other health issues besides insomnia.

You should avoid eating late. Try to eat at least 4 hours before bedtime. Avoid heavy dishes and sugar or fat laden foods before bedtime. Avoid any caffeine such as soda, coffee or chocolate. Herbal supplements and medications may also cause insomnia. You should consult your physician regarding your medications that may affect your sleep. Alcohol can also affect your sleep. It may initially sedate but ultimately make you restless and prevent restful sleep.

Exercise is great for sleep. Make sure you get your daily exercise. Develop a consistent night routine. It will help you clear your mind and program yourself that it is bedtime. Also, right before bed, you should unplug from all electronic devices. Light from your electronic devices can interrupt your sleep. Use an eye mask or hang black out curtains to help you sleep in total darkness.
