Allspice also known as jamaican pepper, myrtle pepper, pimiento or pimento (malagueta) is the dried unripe berry of the pimenta dioica tree native to the caribbean and central america.
Allspice is a warm and sweet spice that has medicinal and culinary uses. Traditionally, allspice has been used to treat digestive problems, reduce pain and promote relaxation.
Allspice has anti-microbial, anti-viral, anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory properties. Allspice also contains essential vitamins and minerals including manganese, vitamin B5, calcium, iron, and copper.
Allspice is rich in plant compounds including, eugenol, quercetin, gallic acid,and ericifolin. All of the plant compounds are powerful antioxidants that may have cancer-fighting properties.
Test-tube studies have shown that eugenol, quercetin, gallic acid and ericifolin may prevent the spread of tumors and decrease the growth of tumors. Other studies have also shown that allspice may have anti-cancer effects in breast, gastric and colon cancers. More human research is needed.
Allspice may help ease menopause symptoms, including hot flashes.
Allspice may also manage blood sugar levels. Allspice may also help treat gas, bloating and indigestion. Allspice may also promote weight management.
Allspice is frequently found in over the counter toothache remedies. Studies have shown that eugenol found in allspice may help reduce pain when applied topically. Allspice may also help to treat headaches and muscle cramps.
Allspice may also improve heart health and boost your immunity.
