Cantaloupe (cucumis melon) also known as muskmelon is a type of a melon belonging to the cucurbitaceae (cu·cur·bit- tay-see) family that also includes cucumbers, pumpkins and squashes. The cantaloupe most likely originated in a region in South Asia to Africa. Cantaloupe was later introduced into Europe and around 1890 became a commercial crop in the United States.
Cantaloupe has essential vitamins and minerals including vitamin K, vitamin A, vitamin C, potassium, folate, niacin, vitamin B6, magnesium, zinc, manganese, phosphorus, copper. selenium, and calcium.
Cantaloupe has a high water content at almost 90% and may help prevent dehydration.
