Health benefits of Eggplants

Eggplants, also known as aubergines, are a fruit, commonly cooked as a vegetable belonging the the nightshade (solanaceae) family. Eggplants are native to India, Africa and South Asia.

Eggplants contain essential vitamins and minerals including vitamin K, vitamin C, potassium, folate, manganese, magnesium, copper, niacin, thiamine, and vitamin B6.

Eggplants are rich in antioxidants. Antioxidants help fight free radicals in the body and may help reduce the risk of chronic diseases.

Eggplants have a high water content that may help prevent dehydration.

Eggplants are rich in fiber that which help promote digestion and promote weight loss.  Eggplants may also help manage diabetes.

Eggplants may help promote heart health. Eggplants may reduce bad cholesterol levels and improve good cholesterol levels.

Eggplants may also help prevent birth defects due to its folic acid content. 

Eggplants may also promote brain health and may help prevent cancer.  Eggplants may also improve eye health and may prevent age-related macular degeneration (AMD) due to its lutein and zeaxanthin content.

Eggplants should be avoided if you have an autoimmune disease because it promotes inflammation since it is part of the Solanaceae family. It is a nightshade. Nightshades are inflammatory.

If you have an eggplant allergy then please do not consume. Eggplants contain high levels of oxalates that may be problematic if you have kidney issues and may lead kidney function harm and/or kidney stones.
