Health Benefits of Choline
Health Benefits of Choline
Choline is an essential nutrient that is naturally present in some foods and available as a dietary supplement. You can make a small amount of choline in your liver but most of the choline in your body comes from the food you eat.
Choline supports various vital bodily functions, including cell maintenance, DNA synthesis, metabolism, and nervous system functioning.
Choline may help protect heart health and brain health.
Choline may also help reduce the risk of congenital irregularities and pregnancy complications. In a 2013 study, women in their third trimester of pregnancy consumed either 480mg or 930mg of choline a day. Those who took higher doses of choline had reduced markers of preeclampsia.
Choline may also improve cystic fibrosis symptoms. In a 2018 study, cystic fibrosis patients who consumed choline had improved lung function.
Choline is found in various foods including, beef, soybean, eggs, poultry, fish, mushrooms, potatoes, legumes, milk, cruciferous vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds.
Choline deficiency may cause muscle and liver disease, contribute to cardiovascular disease, dementia and neural tube irregularities in infants.
As always consult with your physician.
