How does our skin provide protection?
The skin provides protection for the delicate inner parts of the body (organs). Its tough and thick keratin layer responds to pressure by getting thicker. There is further protection for the deeper tissues provided by a layer of fat right underneath the skin that is attached to it. The fat also insulates us from the cold and acts as a storage place for fat which can be used to make energy when food is scarce.
The skin also provides a powerful immunity. It is our first defense against pathogenic organisms. The barrier of the tough outer layer of the epidermis is part of this, plus a special reaction between watery swear and only sebum forms or acid mantle on the skin. To ensure a good, strong acid mantle, we need good quality nutrients in the skin.
The skin is also one of our major organs of elimination. It gets rid of substances that it doesn’t want because they are harmful to our body.
